Safe-to-fail experiment

Also: Safe-to-fail probe

A small intervention in a complex system that is designed so that if it fails, the damage is contained — run in parallel with others to learn how the system responds.

Instead of betting on one plan, you run several small probes based on different coherent hypotheses, some of them deliberately contradictory. You decide in advance what success and failure look like and how you would amplify or dampen each. The point is not to be right first time but to learn quickly and cheaply.
