Enabling constraint

Also: Enabling Constraint

A loose constraint that allows a system to hold together and develop without fixing what happens — the typical constraint of complex systems.

Enabling constraints connect agents and give them something to coordinate around, while leaving room for new patterns to emerge: a shared language, a regular meeting, a small set of simple rules, a common goal. Too tight and they become governing; too loose and the system drifts towards chaos.
