Concept

Constructor

Also: Constructor

Something that reliably changes how a system behaves without itself being changed by doing so — like a catalyst, a gate, a stage or a ritual.

In Cynefin's later theory of constraints, constructors sit alongside constraints. A festival's entry to the stage area is one: the same crowd that behaves unpredictably on the campsite becomes highly predictable — twenty thousand people celebrating one band — the moment it passes through. Designing constructors is a powerful, often overlooked lever.
